El presente artículo tiene el objetivo de exponer los efectos del cambio climático exacerbado por la industria de hidrocarburos, además de analizar los diferentes instrumentos internacionales vinculantes y no vinculantes que forman parte de la gobernanza de esta región. Desde 1996, el Consejo Ártico se ha encargado de salvaguardar los ecosistemas septentrionales. Sin embargo, las regulaciones aún son laxas y se requiere que, a través de la cooperación regional e internacional, se implementen medidas más estrictas que puedan apoyar el desarrollo sustentable de una región altamente codiciada por sus recursos energéticos. Th is essay highlights the eff ects of climate change intensifi ed by the fossil fuel industry, and analyses diff erent binding and non–binding international instruments that shape the governance of this region. Since 1996, the Arctic Council has been in charge of safeguarding the northern ecosystems, however, regulations are still lax and it is required that, through regional and international cooperation, stricter measures could support the sustainable development of a region highly coveted for its energy resources.
