Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman lähtökohtana oli Sevettijärven koululla vuosina 2006–2007 toteutettu ympäristö- ja yhteisötaiteellinen projekti, joka sisälsi neljä eri toimintajaksoa huomioiden tämän kolttasaamelaisen kylän erityispiirteet. Projekti oli osa ArctiChildren-hankkeen kehittämistyötä. Perusteet kulttuurisen monimuotoisuuden säilyttämiselle nousevat jo Hallituksen kestävän kehityksen edistämisen periaatepäätöksestä (1998). Toiminnassa pohjauduttiin myös Konu & Rimpelän (2002) tekemään koulujen hyvinvoinninedistämismalliin. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tutkia, kuinka kehittää ympäristötaiteellista toimintaa pohjoisen monikulttuurisessa kyläyhteisössä Sevettijärvellä, joka vahvistaa oppilaiden kulttuuri-identiteettiä sekä edistää heidän hyvinvointiaan. Lähestymistapani tutkimuksen tekemiseen on toimintatutkimuksellinen. Aineistoni koostui oppilaiden palautteista, kirjallisista ja kuvallisista dokumenteista sekä havainnoinnista. Teemoittelin aineistoni teoriataustastani nousevien keskeisten käsitteiden mukaisesti ja näiden teemoittelujen pohjalta tein päätelmäni tutkimukseni tavoitteen onnistumisessa. Tutkimukseni osoittaa, että onnistuakseen hyvinvointia edistävässä tavoitteessaan, kehittämistyön tulee olla kaikki toiminnassa mukana olevat yksilöt huomioivaa. Koimme oppilaiden kulttuuri-identiteetin jo vahvaksi toiminnan edetessä, mutta ympäristötaiteen menetelmien tuovan kuitenkin jotain uutta kulttuurin esittelemiseksi. Oppilaiden palautteiden perusteella ympäristö- ja yhteisötaiteellinen toiminta koettiin yleisesti ottaen positiiviseksi. Ympäristötaiteen ajatus paikkasidonnaisuudesta toiminnan lähtökohtana antaa myös mahdollisuuden käyttämiemme menetelmien soveltamiseen muissakin kouluissa, joten tutkimuksellani on myös taidekasvatuksellista merkitystä. The starting point for this Master Thesis was an environmental community art project held in the school of Sevettijärvi during 2006-2007. The main goals of this project were to improve the psychosocial well-being and to support the cultural identity of the schoolchildren trough the means of environmental art. This environmental community art project based its work on the ArctiChildren-project, which is a cross-border training programme supporting school education in the promotion of psychosocial well-being in the Barents region. Environmental Art project connected the Skolt Sami history, nature and other special characters in Sevettijärvi village to the everyday common life of the pupils. Also the Programme for Sustainable Development of the Government (1998) gives enough reasons to sustain cultural diversity and good life. In practice, we also grounded our actions in Konu&Rimpelä's (2002) model of the Well-being in schools. The goal of this Master Thesis was to research how to evolve Environmental Art in the northern multicultural community in Sevettijärvi, which was to promote well-being and support cultural identity of the children. I worked in this project with Heini Nieminen, who also wrote her Master Thesis on this project. My method is action research, and my material consists of the interviews and feedbacks of the children, literate and photographic documents, and my own observations. I organized my material with different themes based on my theoretical concepts and made my conclusions through these findings. My research proves that in order to succeed in the promotion of well-being of the participants everyone working in the project should be taken equally into consideration. The main essential elements we found in the promotion of well-being through Environmental Art were: (1) the respect a student receives for his/her work, (2) the opportunities a student has for self-fulfillment and (3) the participation in the decision-making affecting his/her work. While working with children in Sevettijärvi we felt the cultural identity of the children already strong but at the same time Environmental Art producing another way of introducing their own Skolt Sami culture. Based on the answers of the children the Environmental Community Art project was considered to be positive. The idea of the place-specific art in this Environmental Community Art Project gives also an opportunity to apply the methods we used in other schools as well. Therefore I consider this research to have significance also in perspective of Art Education.
