Carbon and nutrient fluxes in the North Atlantic Ocean

This study presents underway pCO2 data of a whole seasonal cycle in the North Atlantic between 40°N and 55°N. The data are compared to a historical dataset and the CO2 fluxes between atmosphere and ocean are calculated. The driving forces of the seawater pCO2 (temperature, biology, gas exchange, advection and convection) are quantified and nutrient concentration in the mixed layer of the North Atlantic are estimated. Furthermore a combined dataset of surface measurements of CO2 and N2O are used to estimate biological production rates in the Mauritanian upwelling region off Northwest Africa. In dieser Studie wird ein kompletter Jahresgang von kontinuierlichen pCO2-Messungen im Oberflächenwasser des Nordatlantiks (zw. 40°N und 55°N) präsentiert. Die Daten werden mit einem historischen Datensatz verglichen und die CO2-Flüsse zwischen Atmospäre und Ozean werden berechnet. Weiter werden die Komponenten, die den pCO2 im Oberflächenwasser antreiben (Temperatur, Biologie, Gasaustausch, Advektion und Konvektion) quantifiziert und die Nährstoffkonzentration in der durchmischten Deckschickt wird abgeschätzt. Außerdem wird ein kombinierter Datensetz von CO2- und N2O-Messungen im Auftriebsgebiet vor Mauretanien (Nordwest-Afrika) benutzt, um dort biologische Produktionsraten zu bestimmen.
