RIcker's 1892 building design was the University of Illinois's anticipation of new collection items from the World's Columbian Exposition. Lack of funds eliminated planned museum space, so much of the collection remained in University Hall, the physics building, and classrooms and corridors of this building until 1909-1910 additions. Major museum acquisitions from the 1913 Crocker Expedition to Greenland swelled the collection and caused a permanent overflow of displays into the halls.
