Although the exigency of achieving a mutually-beneficial, reciprocal form of communication between settler-state and First Peoples has grown especially visible in our present moment, the mechanics of listening and speaking both within and between communities have in fact long been a pivotal concern in First Peoples’ fiction. This project investigates the functions of dialogue in Greek-Cherokee novelist Thomas King’s Green Grass, Running Water With attention to King’s unique style of writing non-dialogues between characters, as well as the structural role that dialogue plays in his writing more broadly, my analysis shows how the act of refusing to listen becomes a means for transforming and generating new conversations across different (typically intercommunal) power dynamics. En Red Skin, White Mask Glen (Piel Roja, Máscaras Blancas) Sean Coulthard se refiere a las asimetrías que plagan los intentos dirigido por el Estado para reforzar el reconocimiento, la reciprocidad, y reconciliación con las comunidades de los Primeros Habitantes en la Canadá post-TRC. Aunque, la exigencia de conseguir una forma recíproca de comunicación beneficiosa entre el estado colonizador y los Primeros Habitantes, ha aumentado su visibilidad especialmente en el momento actual; las mecánicas de escucha y habla tanto dentro de, como entre comunidades lleva siendo de hecho una preocupación central en la ficción de los Primeros Habitantes, desde hace tiempo. Este proyecto investiga las funciones del diálogo en Green Grass, Running Water del novelista griego-cheroqui Thomas King, con la atención del estilo único del Rey al escribir secuencias no dialogadas entre los personajes, tanto como la labor estructural del diálogo en su escritura más amplia. Mi análisis muestra cómo el hecho de rechazarse a escuchar, se convierte en el recurso para transformar y generar nuevas conversaciones entre diferentes dinámicas de poder (comúnmente intercomunales).
