Summary: | In this artide we describe two retouched artifacts made of Rijckholt-type flint, mined in the southernmost part of the Netherlands, near Maastricht. The first artefact, a blade fragment, was found by the second author at a distance of more than 200 kilometres from its source. A second, complete blade was found at a more southernly location and is retouched along the sides. Both artifacts display a similar rounding of the proximal end in combination with splintering on the ventral side. These phenomena are not necessarily the result of use as a fire-making tool, although they do resemble tools known to have had that use. Finds made from this type of flint are quite rare in the northern Netherlands and possibly predate the TRB. |
