In the last two millennia, the area has been a junelian of migration and trade routes. Many cultures have passed through the delta during that period. In June 2000, an ar­chaeological survey was carried out to locate sites of archaeological interest in the southern part of the Dvina. This survey was preceded by historical and cartographical research in Dutch and Russian archives and libraries.
