A Sacalina de Tchekhov : um relato de viagem e o sistema prisional nas franjas do Império Russo (século XIX)

Em 1890 Anton Pavlovitch Tchekhov, famoso escritor russo, decidiu fazer uma longa viagem à colônia penal da Ilha de Sacalina, no Extremo Oriente do Império. Durante esta viagem, o escritor avaliou as condições de habitação dos presos, fez reflexões a respeito dos castigos que eles recebiam e também sobre o papel da administração da colônia no tratamento dos condenados a trabalhos forçados. Um relato de viagem que transita nas fronteiras entre literatura, jornalismo e trabalho científico, o texto de Tchekhov é uma importante fonte para estudar a sociedade composta por aqueles que foram exilados para uma das partes mais longínquas e inóspitas do Império Russo, por aqueles que os acompanharam até lá por sua própria vontade e por aqueles que foram levados até este local por suas carreiras. Para abordálo, este trabalho será realizado em três etapas: uma análise do que se classifica como a “bagagem” do autor as convicções morais e as visões acerca da sociedade russa que ele leva consigo para a ilha , aliada à inserção do texto no seu contexto dentro da área da literatura de viagem; uma contextualização histórica para compreender o cenário russo à época da concepção e do desenvolvimento da colônia penal; e um exame aprofundado da fonte, buscando o diálogo entre a bibliografia estudada e os testemunhos, opiniões e teses que o autor apresenta durante sua passagem por Sacalina. In 1890 Anton Pavlovitch Tchekhov, famous Russian writer, decided to make a long journey to the penal colony of the Sakhalin Island, in the Empire’s Far East. During this trip, the writer evaluated the prisoner’s conditions of habitation, reflected on the punishment they received and also on the role of the colony’s administration in the treatment of the condemned to forced labor. A work on travel literature that oscillates in the boundaries between literature, journalism and scientific work, Tchekhov’s text is an important source to study the society composed by those who were exiled to one of the most far away and inhospitable regions of the Russian Empire, by those who accompanied them there by their own will and by those who were led there by their careers. To approach it, this study will be executed in three steps: an analysis of what is classified as the author’s “luggage” the moral convictions and the views on the russian society that he brings with him to the island , allied to the text’s insertion on its context in the field of travel literature; a historical contextualization to comprehend the russian conjuncture at the time of the conception and development of the penal colony; and an indepth exam of the source material, looking for a dialogue between the researched literature and the records, the opinions and theses that the author presents during his passage through Sakhalin.
