On the island of Helgoland in the south-eastern North Sea (54° 11’ N, 7° 52’ E) the assumed breeding stock of the Northern Fulmar is recorded yearly as ”apparently occupied sites“ (AOS) since 1972. In three years of more intensive studies at 41 different, easily observable breeding sites a total of 96 AOS occupied in June generated 38 fledged young, corresponding to a mean breeding success of 0.40 young birds per AOS. A recalculation of the breeding success excluding the prospectors and adult non-breeders, which leave the cliff until August, however resulted in an average of 0.67 young birds per actually breeding pair. Isolated breeding sites or those at the margin of the colony were presumably occupied by rather inexperienced, inexpertly or conditionally weak breeding pairs or by prospectors: the (underestimated) breeding success of the June-AOS was higher in the central area of the colony than at the margin, but no local difference became obvious after recalculation on the basis of the actually breeding pairs. Out of the altogether 41 different breeding sites a mere 12 were comparatively successful and generated three quarters of the total breeding success (28 fledged young birds).
