Description
Summary:Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are a cosmopolitan specie that inhabit all the major ocean basins in the world. Its annual migration cycle alternates between a period of feeding in productive waters and a period of reproduction and breeding in tropical and subtropical waters. In the breeding areas humpback whales show a great variety of social behaviors that have not been reported in the feeding areas, such as: a frequent association and disintegration of groups, singing and aerial behavior. It has been shown that the geography of the continental shelf is one of the most important factors in the distribution of humpback whales in the breeding areas.
