Not only is the reserve in a unique geographical location, straddling an international boundary, but the latter was imposed by the American-European colonial powers on peoples who were strangers to this geopolitical principle of spatial organization. Therefore, the border complicates the daily lives of residents, all the more so since the attacks of September 11, 2001, which saw a tightening of the American borders while the First Nations are demanding freedom of movement. Secondly, the particular configuration of the reserve creates a jurisdictional problem for law enforcement agencies whose mandate is to secure the international line and prevent all types of traffic. Long regarded as a “gaping hole,” the reserve poses security problems, as its exploitation by organized crime has long demonstrated. This article therefore explores the political and human issues that structure this border community. Cet article analyse l’impact que la frontière Canada/Etats-Unis a sur la réserve Mohawk d’Akwesasne. Non seulement la réserve se trouve dans une situation géographique originale, à cheval sur la ligne internationale mais cette dernière a été imposée par les pouvoirs coloniaux américano-européens à des peuples qui ne connaissaient pas ce principe géopolitique d’organisation de l’espace. La frontière complique donc le quotidien des résidents et ce, d’autant plus depuis les attentats du 11 septembre 2001 qui ont vu un resserrement des frontières américaines alors même que les Premières Nations revendiquent une liberté de circulation. Ensuite, la configuration particulière que constitue la réserve engendre un véritable casse-tête juridictionnel pour les agences des forces de l’ordre dont le mandat est de sécuriser la ligne internationale et prévenir les trafics en tout genre.
