Led na moru predstavlja prepreku svakom brodu, čak i ledolomcu, međutim, brodovi u sposobnim rukama uspješno plove kroz vode prekrivene ledom. Jedno od prvih načela uspješne plovidbe je održavanje slobode manevriranja. Jednom kada brod postane zarobljen, kreće se u smjeru kamo se kreće i led. Plovidba ledom zahtijeva veliko strpljenje i može biti vrlo naporna bez obzira da li se radi o plovidbi s ili bez pratnje ledolomca. Duži put kroz otvoreno more oko područja prekrivenog teškim ledom čije su granice poznate često je najbrži i najsigurniji put do luke, odnosno do otvorenog mora pri napuštanju luke. Međutim, navedeno nije uvijek moguće. Zbog toga treba poduzeti mjere predostrožnosti kako bi plovidba bila što sigurnija u područjima prekrivenim ledom, te se ovaj rad bavi mjerama predostrožnosti i sigurnošću plovidbe u ledu. Sea ice presents an obstacle to any ship, even an icebreaker, however, ships in capable hands navigate successfully through ice-covered waters. One of the first principles of successful navigation is maintaining freedom of maneuver. Once a ship is trapped, it moves in the direction the ice moves. Ice navigation requires a lot of patience and can be very tiring regardless of whether you are sailing with or without an icebreaker. A longer route through the open sea around an area covered by heavy ice whose boundaries are known is often the fastest and safest route to the port, or to the open sea when leaving the port. However, this is not always possible. For this reason, precautionary measures should be taken to make navigation as safe as possible in ice-covered areas, and this paper deals with precautionary measures and the safety of navigation in ice.
