The present dissertation has its focus on the museology developed in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (MOA). Specifically, the curatorial and museological work concerning Canadian First Nations cultural heritage and artistic traditions. Nowadays, First Nations descendants and native communities’ members are actively engaged in their own cultural and artistic representation in the museums, collaborating frequently with museological agents. The central question of this dissertation intend to provide a better understanding of what constitutes collaborative museology as it is practiced in MOA? What are the theoretical foundations and practical methods employed by collaborative museology, and is it compatible with a critical and reflexive museology? This dissertation take a collaborative approach by allowing a central role to MOA’s curators to self-represent their work through the opinions expressed in the interviews. This academic exercise resulted on the establishment of some general premises used in the collaborative museological work at MOA, like mutual respect, constructive discussion and decision share. The curatorial experience and social relations, derived from previous collaborations, assume a major role on the elaboration of these exhibitions. Through the development of social interactions between native communities’ members and curators, exhibitions will be the final product of many discussions and negotiations in a dialogical relationship. However, the same ideals and values present since the beginning of collaborations will later undermine the little critical museology produced around these exhibitions. A presente dissertação tem o seu foco na museologia desenvolvida no Museu de Antropologia na Universidade da Colômbia Britânica (MOA). Especificamente, o trabalho museológico curadorial em torno das heranças culturais e tradições ... Master Thesis First Nations Universidade de Coimbra: Estudo Geral
