A new project, WACSWAIN, seeks to increase this knowledge by further drilling to bedrock on two further ice rises in this region. In a single-season project, an ice core was recovered to bedrock at 651 m on Skytrain Ice Rise using an ice core drill in a fluid-filled borehole. In a second season, a rapid access drill was used to recover ice chips to 323 m on Sherman Island in a dry borehole, though failing to reach the bedrock which was at an estimated depth of 428 m.
Royal Society ERC Article in Journal/Newspaper Antarc* Antarctic Antarctica Berkner Island British Antarctic Survey ice core Ice Sheet James Ross Island Ross Island Sherman Island Weddell Sea Apollo - University of Cambridge Repository Antarctic Berkner Island ENVELOPE(-48.117,-48.117,-79.333,-79.333) Fletcher Promontory ENVELOPE(-80.000,-80.000,-78.416,-78.416) Ross Island Sherman Island ENVELOPE(-100.000,-100.000,-73.050,-73.050) Skytrain Ice Rise ENVELOPE(-78.333,-78.333,-79.583,-79.583) Weddell Weddell Sea
