Individuals sighted numbered 330, and the population of the region was estimated at 405, representing a density of about 0.6 animals per square kilometre in areas below the 200-metre contour. Comparison with counts from as far back as 1954 reveals that the population has increased on average by two per cent per annum over the last twenty years, allowing a partial recovery from its previously depleted level.
