. Dr. Lyon, a true scientist-patriot, was well recognized for his almost single-handed efforts over several decades to provide the United States with the world's first true "Arctic Submarine." He was a three-time recipient of the Distinguished Civilian Service Award (in 1955, 1956, and 1958) and received the Distinguished Federal Service Award from U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1962. . [He also received many other awards in recognition for his service as scientist aboard submarine expeditions to Antarctica, the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, the Arctic Ocean, North Pole and Northwest Passage and as founder of the Submarine Research Laboratory.]
