In simple hunting, fishing, gathering societies, much of "education" is essentially "learning by doing" through imitation and apprenticeship. Formal instruction, if present at all, is brief, and is often a part of puberty initiation rites. Even in folk societies where formal education does exist it usually consumes but a small portion of the child's day, for a brief period of his life, and this is overshadowed by the "learning by doing," informal aspects of his education.
