The impact of internal tide mixing parameterizations in an eddy-permitting model of the Arctic Ocean

In this study we consider the impact of enhanced ocean mixing due to the breaking of internal tides on model state in an eddy-permitting numerical model of the Arctic Ocean. We compare the impact of two enhanced tidal mixing parameterizations each with different vertical dissipation profiles based o...

We compare the impact of two enhanced tidal mixing parameterizations each with different vertical dissipation profiles based on Polzin [2009] and Jayne and St Laurent [2001], respectively, in contrast to a control run without the additional tidal mixing parameterization. We find that the model runs with implementations of the two internal tide mixing parameterizations have varied and in some instances, large differences in important model variables indicating that the inclusion of internal tide mixing in a numerical model of the Arctic Ocean will require careful consideration.
