Evidence is growing regarding the effect of human activity on climate. Appropriate management strategies are needed to both reduce and adapt to the effects of climate change. This study suggests an approach for the assessment of forest management options intended to mitigate climate change. The study develops an analytical tool that quantifies potential carbon accumulation in forests and removed carbon by wood harvesting operations. The analysis controls for the higher forest growth that results from global warming. The tool also tracks, in a geographically explicit fashion, the net value of carbon storage in forests, profits from harvested wood products, and the value of carbon dioxide emitted by production processes. The technique is applied as a case study to an even-aged forest area in the Southern Taiga zone of Central Siberia, Russia. A scenario analysis on forest management options indicates that the potential carbon storage of forests varies with the nature of the harvesting regime, including the presence of thinning, harvesting intensity, rotation length, and species composition of the forest stand. This case study shows that the choice of a forest management option is sensitive to the price of carbon and to the price of harvested wood products. The study concludes with a recommendation that, to mitigate climate change, it is important for forestry planning to consider alternative management strategies along with the carbon sequestration capacity of forest stands. submitted by Kentaro Aoki Abweichender Titel laut Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des Verfassers Zsfassung in dt.
