Summary: | 33 The benefits of the program are more than a matter of numbers. Many former Fulbright scholars now occupy positions of importance in their countries -- in diplomacy and other fields of government, in education and science and the arts. Through the attitudes and knowledge that they bring to their work, and through their influence on colleagues and associates, I believe that these former exchange scholars are making a lasting contribution to the improvement of international relations. Since 1961 a number of countries, including, I am very happy to say, Iceland, have undertaken to share the costs of the exchange program with the United States Government.* ___________________________ *Iceland started sharing the cost of of program in 1966 and contributes $2,528.00 to our $35,000.00.
