description Des de l’antropocè, el planeta està amenaçat per una sèrie de riscos associats a l’activitat humana. Entre aquests, la contaminació química planteja desafiaments conceptuals i tècnics que fan especialment complexa la seua caracterització a escala global. Què és un contaminant? Quines propietats són rellevants per a definir-lo? Els estudis sobre l’abundància, la persistència, la mobilitat en el medi i el potencial de bioacumulació de compostos químics que usem diàriament estan canviant el paradigma d’allò que consideràvem un contaminant. Així, compostos que no generen toxicitat aguda poden ser perillosos per als ecosistemes si s’aporten de manera contínua al medi, es donen a elevadíssimes concentracions o es dispersen fàcilment. Donar visibilitat a aquesta contaminació oblidada que afecta els nostres oceans i que generem inconscientment és essencial per a protegir el planeta. Since the start of the Anthropocene, the planet has been threatened by a number of risks associated with human activity. Among them, chemical pollution is posing conceptual and technical challenges that are particularly difficult to characterise on a global scale. We must ask ourselves, what is a pollutant? What properties are relevant in their definition? Studies on the abundance, persistence, mobility in the environment, and bioaccumulation potential of the chemical compounds we use every day are changing the paradigm of what we consider pollutants. Thus, compounds that do not cause acute toxicity can still be dangerous for the ecosystem when they continually reach the environment, exist in very high concentrations, or disperse easily. Thus, raising awareness about the forgotten pollution that we unknowingly generate but which is affecting our oceans will be essential to protect the planet.
