Accompanying plaque reads "The Polar Museum. Scott Polar Research Institute. Caroline Hack, "ReCover". 2022 marks the 50th Anniversary of the adoption of a ten-year moratorium on commercial whaling by the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. It is also 40 years since the International Whaling Commission implemented a pause on commercial whaling. To commemorate this, artist Caroline Hack has made a tarpaulin cover for the Institute's whaling harpoon gun, "taking it out of sight, if not out of mind, performing an act of decommissioning and closure. Also it is about hope, hope that the whale populations will recover as some already are, and hope that the industrialised killing of whales will one day cease entirely." Visit Caroline's website at www.carolinehack.com. The images are black and white line drawings on white "patches" on the black tarpaulin. The images are of maps, sea creatures, ships and whaling equipment.
