The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that over 570,000 of the nation's prisoners (51%) reported the use of alcohol or drugs while committing their offense. Uniform Crime Reports statistics show that the overall rate of reported crime in Alaska grew by 7 percent from 1988 through 1997.
