In the traditional clan dances the face of the dancer is usually hidden to focus attention on the face of the hat. Dancers move to emulate the clan's symbolic animal. The Bear Clan Totem disappeared from the village in 1908 to reappear in Greeley, Colo., as a gift from the secretary of education for Alaska.
