Summary:This map was prepared from an examination conducted in December 1890 and from a reconnaissance by Assistant Engineer J. P. White. It accompanied a report of the examination submitted in April 1891 and was published in and extracted from the 1891 annual report of the Chief Engineer. The map portrays the Northwest River and surrounding area in Virginia and North Carolina. Roads, railroads, and waterways and other topographical features are shown. Residences, churches, and post offices are also shown but not identified. Soundings are given for the river. Features noted include the Dismal Swamp and Little canals, Glencoe Farm, Moyock, Hog and Faraby islands, Currituck Sound, Tulls Landing, Tulls and Shingle Landing creeks, and Wallaceton Post Office.
