Description
Summary:This map was prepared by the U.S. Coast Survey as one in the series of numbered charts depicting the Atlantic coast of the United States. It is the 1900 edition with corrections to 1902 issued by Henry Smith Pritchett (1857-1939) as superintendent of a map first published in 1889. The triangulation was executed by C. P. Bolles, A. S. Wadsworth, and D. B. Wainwright between 1851 and 1888; topography by John Mechan, C. P. Bolles, Charles T. Iardella, and D. B. Wainwright between 1851 and 1887; and hydrography by T. A. Jenkins, E. B. Thomas, J. E. Pillsbury, J. F. Moser, F. A. Wilson, W. Irving Vinal, and D. B. Wainwright between 1851 and 1887. Astronomical and magnetic observations were made by Alexander Dallas Bache, B. G. Gould, L. F. Pourtales, G. W. Dean, E. Goodfellow, C. P. Bolles, D. B. Wainwright, and J. B. Baylor between 1854 and 1887. The bar and dredged channels of the Cape Fear River are from surveys conducted until June 1901 by the U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers. The map portrays the coastline of North Carolina from Old Topsail Inlet to Cape Fear and the Cape Fear River from its mouth to Wilmington. Topographical features, roads, locations of structures, and other landmarks are shown. Soundings are given, and the depth of the water is also indicated by shading. Information relating to the soundings, aids to navigation, tides, and other aspects of the map is found in the upper right corner and in the upper left beneath the title. This map was formerly classified as M.C. 57-A.
