Within the heterogeneous corpus of ‘northern sea narratives’, British nineteenth-century travel accounts about Iceland occupy a special place in the field of cultural studies, for they not only enlighten foreign portrayals of the Icelandic ‘Other’, but also attest to the vital role played by ‘cultural seascapes’ in the process of self- and hetero- identity construction. By drawing on British travelogues of the Icelandic jaunt in the early and central years of the nineteenth century, especially focusing on Lord Dufferin’s popular Letters from High Latitudes (1857), the article intends to chart the changing attitudes toward the voyage north as mirrored in the shifting representations of the passage across the Norwegian sea, and verify to what extent they contributed to shape or challenge existing ideas of North.
