Etude International audience The French Southern and Antarctic Lands, territories on the other side of the world, are open-air laboratories requiring complex logistics to conduct scientific research there. Home to an abundant wealth of biodiversity, they form part not only of a national environmental protection strategy but also of an international agenda with increasing matters to address given the effects of climate change. To ensure the sustainable protection of these ecosystems, the legal status of some territories has recently been shored up by the creation or extension of national nature reserves, the use of authorisations for which highlights the significant role played by the Prefect and Senior Administrator. The authorities must also endeavour to reconcile this protection with the human activities carried out across the different districts. Similarly, they must ensure that France’s sovereignty is affirmed in certain disputed territories and perform surveillance operations of illegal activities. Such misions place the French Southern and Antarctic Lands centre-stage in terms of the challenges facing the planet. Les Terres australes et antarctiques françaises, territoires du bout du monde, forment des laboratoires à ciel ouvert qui nécessitent une logistique complexe pour y mener des recherches scientifiques. Fortes d’une biodiversité abondante, elles s’inscrivent tant dans une stratégie nationale de préservation de l’environnement que dans un agenda international de plus en plus chargé face aux effets du changement climatique. Afin de préserver durablement ces écosystèmes, le statut juridique de certains territoires a récemment été renforcé avec la création ou l’extension de réserves naturelles nationales dont le recours aux autorisations met en avant le rôle prépondérant du préfet administrateur supérieur.
