Des observations récentes indiquent que des modifications importantes dans les vitesses d'écoulement de l'Antarctique et du Groenland sont en train d'avoir lieu, suggérant que d'irréversibles changements ont pu commencer, ce qui est particulièrement inquiétant pour l'avenir. Dans cet article je présenterai les mécanismes physiques et les équations mathématiques qui régissent l'écoulement de la glace, puis j'expliquerai un peu plus en détail ce problème de l'estimation de la contribution des glaciers et calottes polaires au changement de niveau des mers.
