When it is altered, processes such as ocean acidification occur, which is characterized by the decrease in pH caused by an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolved in the water, which causes harmful effects on marine ecosystems. El carbono es un elemento esencial para la vida, este pasa por un ciclo de transformaciones entre los seres vivos, el medio terrestre y acuático, siendo de gran impacto para el clima del planeta; en el cual el océano, representa un importante papel. Cuando es alterado en cantidad presente ocurren procesos como la acidificación oceánica, la cual se caracteriza por ser la disminución del pH causada por un aumento del dióxido de carbono (CO2) disuelto en el agua, lo cual provoca efectos dañinos en los ecosistemas marinos.
