Oxidative stress generated by diesel on the digestive gland of the Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna

The limpet Nacella concinna is a gastropod mollusk widespread along Antarctic coasts. The possible effects of a fuel commonly used in Antarctica on the activity of antioxidant enzymes and oxidative damage on the digestive gland of Nacella concinna, as possible biomarkers for hydrocarbon pollution in...

The possible effects of a fuel commonly used in Antarctica on the activity of antioxidant enzymes and oxidative damage on the digestive gland of Nacella concinna, as possible biomarkers for hydrocarbon pollution in Antarctic coasts were studied. Three groups of 45 individuals each were kept in seawater containing 0, 0.5, or 0.1% diesel. Superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathion-S-transferase, glutathion peroxidase activities, and lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation were studied in 15 animals of each group after 24, 48, and 168 hr of exposure. There was a general trend to increased enzyme activity with increasing doses of diesel. Lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation were significantly increased with the lowest dose of diesel and after 168 hr of exposure. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 12th International Symposium on Pollutant Responses in Marine Organisms - Oxidative Stress (Safety Harbor, FL 5/9-13/2003). Fil:Ansaldo, M.
