The 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS) was conducted by Statistics Canada to collect data on the lifestyles and living conditions of Aboriginal peoples in Canada. The survey was designed and implemented in partnership with national Aboriginal organizations. This is the third time the Aboriginal Peoples Survey has been carried out by Statistics Canada; the first time was in 1991 and the second was in 2001. The data from both the 1991 and 2001 APS were widely used. An extremely important user of the 1991 data was the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP). They used the data as a primary source of demographic, social and economic data for their final report and related research studies. The Commissionu0092s final report recommended that the APS be conducted regularly to monitor the demographic and social conditions of Aboriginal peoples. Data from the 1991 and 2001 APS have also been used by Aboriginal organizations, community planners, service providers, governments and researchers to inform decision-making (program/policy planning and development), to improve services for Aboriginal peoples and to support academic research. With the release of the 2006 data, the APS can also be used to track changes over time and provide an up-to-date picture of the situation of Aboriginal peoples. The APS provides data about Aboriginal (Inuit, Metis and off-reserve First Nations) people 6 years of age and over living in urban, rural and northern locations across Canada.
