Summary:The article offers a perspective on the 20th century youth in coastal Iceland as agents actively shaping their society. It explores four periods of such agency, starting with young people at the forefront of the release from the old agricultural society. It explores the changes of emphasis between social, cultural, polical, economic and technical agency. Currently young people in several villages play an active role on mediating between local life-forms and global impulses on all these levels.
