Description
Summary:Overhead shot of a man in a kayak. In 1929 Loewe accompanied Professor Alfred Wegener, pioneer of continental-drift theory, on his last Greenland expedition July 1930-August 1931. Wegener immediately set about organizing a trial expedition for the summer of 1929 to select a site for the western station and a route onto the inland ice. A site at the head of Umanak Fjord near 71°N was selected for the western station. Historical note: The expedition's aim was to study the upper air, snow and ice sheet at three stations placed on the West, middle and East of Greenland. When Wegener died on his journey from the central station to the West coast, Loewe became acting expedition leader. Inscription: "Kajakmann Umanak" written on verso.
