He completed a BSc in 1951 and MSc in 1953 and was assistant Curator at the Australia Museum Department of Mineralogy and Petrology. He completed his PhD at the California Institute of Technology in 1956, working as Research Fellow and Fellow from 1956-1964. Professor Lovering was Dean of Science and Professor of Geology at University of Melbourne 1969-1987 and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at University of Melbourne (1985-1987). He became Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Geology at The Flinders University of South Australia 1987-1995. He was Awarded Doctor of Science degrees honoris causa (Hon DSc) from Flinders University 1995 and from University of Melbourne 1999. Professor Lovering formed Geotrack International Pty Ltd to market a new petroleum exploration technique. He was Chairman of several public and private company boards and served on national and international scientific and government committees. He served as President of the Board of UNESCO International Geological Correlation Programme (1985-1987); Vice-President of the International Union of Geological Sciences (1990-1996); Chair of the Australian Antarctic Science Advisory Committee; President of the Geological Society of Australia (1978-1980); and President of the Australian Geoscience Council (1985-1986). He was a member of the 1978 and 1987 Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions. Professor Lovering was President of the Murray-Darling Basin Commission 1994-1999. He was Chairman of the Environment Conservation Council (Victoria) and Australian National Seismic Imaging Resource in 2000. He was awarded an AO in 1993. He is married to Kerry Lovering AOM.
