Women have been largely housebound, which resulted in a city built for men still affecting women travel patterns and behavior in public space. Since women tend to use more public transport than men, and the fact that students often have a very limited financial situation and through this may depend more on the bus than others, it felt important to highlight this particular group. The purpose of this study is to examine how five young female students experience bus travel in Umeå, a medium-sized town in northern Sweden, and what may affect their behavior in these environments. The results discovered through interviews and a thematic-narrative analysis indicates that the human absence and presence is the most crucial factor in how women experience bus travel in Umeå. The presence of other people tends to make these women more comfortable in bus travel. Other influencing circumstances were the build environment, the connection they have to the city and the people in it, and the fact that the woman considered as the weaker sex throughout history. Despite these indications, it seemed like these young women experiencing security in bus travel in the city of Umeå. Instead of seeing bus travel as a barrier they must overcome to reach their destination, they see the bus as a comfortable opportunity.
