Summary:By using dendrochronology, it is possible to create climate archives with high resolution from subfossil remains of trees. 178 samples of pine (Pinus sylvestris) have been collected from the peat-extraction site OpeBrynjeflon in Jämtland, Sweden, in order to be used in climate reconstructions. The aim of this project is to continue this work and analyse these samples in order to (1) find out over how much time and what time-interval is covered by the source-material spans and to extend the pre-existing chronology, and (2) to try to find and interpret potential traces of climate– and environmental change. The main part of the project consisted of measuring the samples using dendrochronological equipment along with the program TSAP-win, but literature studies where also performed. 14C-dating was also performed in order to absolutely date the samples. The analysis resulted in two chronologies, one of which spanned 486 years from 6001 to 5516 + 72 BC. The other one spanned 346 years and could not be absolutely dated. The dated chronology falls within the Holocene thermal maximum, with generally favorable conditions for growth. However, there are some traces of a colder period about 7799-7677 BP. Earlier studies show that despite the prescense of short-lived cold periods throughout Fennoscandia at varying times around 8500-6250 BP, the period between 8000 and 5800 BP is characterized by a generally warm climate.
