Summary: | To a large extent, the historical Sami society is looked upon as non-political and uncivilized. It is problematic, partly because it is false and partly because it could increase conflict in modern Sami issues. This essay focuses on the historical Sami society in the light of fundamental ideas about politics. Can the historical Sami society be viewed as a political society? Which political elements can be identified in the historical Sami society? This study shows that there has been numerous political elements within the Sami society. The original form of Sami organisation is by many considered to be the siida. It was governed by a council that amongst other things was in charge of the distribution of resources within the Siida. If politic is defined as the governing of organized human groups, the Siida should without doubt be viewed as a political institution. Whether or not the historical Sami society was political or not is a complicated question, especially due to the different views on what a political society is. It is, however, possible to say that it was an organized society, far from the image of uncivilised nomads that exist both among scientist and other people.
