This study makes an attempt to show how ethnicity can be analyzed by different ways of interpreting individual agency in a small, non-profit organization, which organizational interests lies with the culture of an ethnic group, in this case the indigenous population of the Nordic countries – the Sami. The organization operates in a region of Sweden that has an almost non-existing, historical or traditional local connection with the Sami population. The organization has a policy of being open to both Sami people and non- Sami people, and by looking at how different members participate in activities this study shows how both of these groups are engaged in the process of influencing the concept of Sami culture. The study also looks at how the Sami members handle their own ethnic identity as Sami living in a traditionally non- Sami region.
