Field data from phasor measurement units indicate high signal quality and that frequency difference is realistic as PSS input. The wide-area PSS is compared against a generic local PSS with shaft speed input. The total performance is comparable, but while the local PSS has better local mode damping, frequency difference appears to give better interarea mode observability.
