The North Atlantic continues to be an area of international geopolitical significance regionally and globally. Since the Cold War there is a significant shift in its security architecture, as well as strong processes of sovereignty, and results of that new independent states and micro-proto-states with self-governing. The North Atlantic region is also characterized by small states, middle powers and super powers with their legacies and maritime interests, as well as the European Union with its growing interests and emerging policies for the region.
