Description
Summary:Ks. englanninkielinen abstrakti The legend of Santa Claus living in Finnish Lapland My flag is based on the legend that the real, authentic, original Santa Claus lives in my home town Rovaniemi at the Arctic Circle. In Finland we call Santa Claus “Joulupukki”. The name refers to Christmas (“joulu”) and a goat (“pukki”). Our tradition mixes “Nuuttipukki”, more of an evil, grey goat figure with horns and a mask with white-bearded American Santa dressed in red. We say he lives in Korvatunturi, but if you visit Lapland you will find him at the Arctic Circle instead. This is one reason for why my Santa is winking his eye: Who knows? You see, Santa’s roots can be traced to historical Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra. He is also said to live at the North Pole where his has a workshop with his elves. Nowadays Santa uses reindeer for his transportation. My flag includes the grey horns of the pagan Nuuttipukki in front, and the golden reindeer horns that now seem to grow from Santa´s head. Santa is winking again: If he even exists, maybe he has both type of horns? Santa is considered as a symbol of something Good. But he has also been accused for representing many things, that people have been against to, such as paganism; Christian religion; commercialism; deceiving children, and prolonging adult´s magical thinking. Here is more reasons for winking: Santa only knows if he is good, bad, or just – used.
