My embroidery illustrates the East Lapland region’s cultural history and the existence of nature gods. I grew up in the Pelkosenniemi village of Pyhäjärvi in the 1980s. I remember my plays and imagination around themes such as nature’s spirits, and stories about them were kind of everyday life occurrences. The patterns in the work derive from the symbolism of ancient witch drums and create a tripartite worldview: upper, middle and lower. “Forest Spirit” addresses the losing connection with nature and the erosion of the links between ancient nature religions.
