Description
Summary:In the subalpine conditions on top of Mt. Brocken (Harz) some species of plants have survived into postglacial times wich may not be be found elsewhere in Germany: Carex bigelowii; Hieracium nigrescens and Pulsatilla alba.Between 1961 and 1989 the Brocken and the region around it was a prohibited area. Soon after the political change when the Brocken was once more open to the public, the population of Pulsatilla alba was investigated and compared with that in 1956. The reasons for the drastic decline are aireborne immissions of NO3, trarnpling and concrete paving. The germination and development to maturity of Pulsatilla alba were observed in culture and in the field. Some clues for its preservation were derived from the investigations.
