The Contingent Valuation method (CV) is applied to the economic valuation of the highlandsnorth of Vatnajökull Glacier, Iceland. The values, as stated by the general public willingness toaccept compensation for the loss that would be generated due to proposed hydropowerdevelopments, or willingness to pay for the benefits provided by the activity give clues about howsuch numbers might be used to assist decision-making about the future management of the wildernessarea. This paper also reports a comparison between a new group-based CV approach, called MarketStall, and conventional in-person interviews.
