Janzen (1977) proposed that frugous vertebrates prefer healthy fruits over those infected with fungi and bacteria as microbiosproduce toxic compounds and antibiotics and also reduce the nutritional value of infected fruits. We assess this scenario using field experiments in which we offer three commercial varieties of fruits of the genus Citrus healthy and infected with Penicillium digitatum.Sorprendedly, frugores (mainly rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus and rodents such as the black rat Rattus rattus and mice, probably Mus spretus and Apodemus sylvaticus) always preferred infected citrus fruits to healthy ‘control’ fruits. In particular, the consumption of frutosinfects of the three varieties studied was up to 32 times higher compared to the consumption of healthy fruit. We propose three exclusionary approaches that could explain the preference of fruits infected with mammals and other fruit vertebrates.
