The Navy and the invention of the Arctic theater as part of the strategic confrontation between East and West in1960 Based on the study of archives preserved in the Service historique de la Défense, this article aims to recall the parallel development of scientific and military knowledge relative to the Arctic and strategic forces. The parallel development began in March 1960, the time when the decision to establish the force de frappe based, among other components, on the MSBS [Sea-Land-Ballistic-Strategic] weapons system was made at the highest level of government. Unknown militarily in 1945, the Arctic Ocean area found itself at the forefront of the confrontation between the two blocs. Mastered by submarine forces immediately after the Second World War, it was the subject of a technical feasibility study and geostrategic thinking about the use of new weapons. The American example thus has been the subject of intense study. Fondé sur l’étude d’archives conservées au Service historique de la Défense, cet article entend rappeler le développement parallèle des connaissances scientifiques et militaires relatives à l’Arctique et aux forces océaniques stratégiques. Il se situe en mars1960, moment où la décision de constitution de la force de frappe fondée, entre autres composantes, sur un système d’armes MSBS vient d’être prise au plus haut niveau de l’État. Inconnu militairement parlant en1945, l’espace océanique arctique se trouve aux avant-postes de la confrontation entre les deux blocs. Maitrisé par les forces sous-marines immédiatement après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a été l’objet d’une étude de faisabilité technique et d’une réflexion géostratégique quant à l’emploi de cette nouvelle arme. L’exemple américain a donc été l’objet d’une intense observation.
