Description
Summary:Chile began treating discards with an integrative approach since the modification of the fishing law in 2012. The discard problem arises as a practice that has multiple forces that include economic, operational, and regulatory factors. The revised discard reduction models (Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Faroe Islands and the European Union) stand out for the flexibility faced by the design of solutions, especially regarding the link between technical measures for handling and the treatment of unwanted capture, the latter as a result after the implementation of all efforts to reduce it. Situation that contrasts with the rigidity of the Chilean model. However, in the Chilean model, the incorporation of a complete set of technological tools and a discard research program should be highlighted, prior to the formulation of the reduction plan, which is then continued to be monitored. The results of the implementation of discard regulations in Chile show a decrease in discards in most fisheries that have discard reduction plans, contributing to the sustainable use of resources and the protection of their ecosystems.
