Le boréalisme identitaire et esthétique de Christian Dotremont

This article discusses the construction of identity and space in the works of the Belgian writer and artist Christian Dotremont (1922-1979), best known as the cofounder of the Cobra-group and as the inventor of the "logogramme". His special relationship with the Sápmi is analyzed in the perspective of a specific discourse on the North called "borealism". The author claims that Dotremont’s mythical self-representation as a "man of the North", his individual choices as well as his aesthetical ideas and artistic practice profoundly renew the traditional approach of the North by the South. La relation privilégiée du surréaliste belge Christian Dotremont (1922-1979) avec le Nord et le monde sami en particulier relève, d’une part, du mythe personnel, des hasards et des choix existentiels, et, de l’autre, d’une réflexion esthétique et d’une pratique artistique, couronnées par l’invention du logogramme. Après avoir rappelé les étapes de la construction d’une généalogie spirituelle nordique par l’artiste de Tervuren et d’Ivalo, nous analysons les enjeux d’une esthétique qui se veut nordique. Finalement, quelques thèmes boréalistes récurrents qui traversent l’œuvre littéraire et graphique de Dotremont sont évoqués.
