The crisis was a result of a neoliberal experiment, which produced an excessive bubble economy between 2003 and 2008. The first political reaction to the crisis was a major swing to the left in 2009, following extensive protests in the streets of Reykjavík. In 2013 voters were disappointed with the left government and a major swing to the centrist Progressive Party emerged. They formed a centre-right government with the Conservatives (IP). With early elections in October 2016, due to revelations from the Panama Papers, there is now a bi-polar swing to the right and left, but away from the center. A new party on the right-wing (Viðreisn) and the Pirate Party and Left-Greens on the left-wing are the major victors. The Pirates stand for democratic reform and increased transparency against political corruption and inequality. They are decisively different from the populist right parties, which have featured strongly in Europe in recent years. So is the new liberal party (Viðreisn). The political turmoil with big swings and new parties continues for the third elections in a row. La crise financière de 2009 a complètement bouleversé la politique islandaise. La crise est le résultat d’expérimentations néolibérales, qui ont produit une bulle financière entre 2003 et 2008. La première réaction politique à ce choc est un virage important à gauche en 2009, à la suite de mouvements de protestation dans les rues de Reykjavík. En 2013, les électeurs ont manifesté leur déception à l’égard du gouvernement de gauche et porté au pouvoir le parti du centre en coalition avec les conservateurs (Parti de l’indépendance).
